Notes from the Desk...

I tell ya, moving, no matter how large or small, can wear you out.  PHEW!!

The last weekend of October, we started working on a recently vacated bedroom in our house to turn it into my office.  Simple job I thought, but was I soon to find out differently.

At first we were going to leave the wallpaper on the walls because we've had so much trouble removing it in other rooms in the past.  However, my wife decided that we would at least take down the border.  So she began pulling the border off and the next thing I knew she has a whole sheet of wallpaper in her hands.  We were both surprised to say the least.

Well since that fist sheet came off so easily, let's keep going we decided, and soon we had the all four walls bare.  Now my wife said the walls needed washing because of all the old glue, which there was hardly any on the walls, but we cleaned them anyway.  Then we had to go shopping for paint, which we bought that same weekend.

That week, I work on the room a little here and a little there.  I filled all the little holes with spackle and I had to patch a couple of bigger holes (we used to have baseboard heaters all throughout the house but now have central heat and air) and let that dry.  The next day I sanded the patches smooth and installed a new piece of baseboard moulding.

Then Friday of that week I painted the ceiling that morning, then that night I painted the walls.  We got up on Saturday and found out that we had to put another coat of paint on the walls, so we did.  One Sunday Pam (my wife) vacuumed and shampooed the carpet.  Later that evening we were able to move two bookcases into the office along with all the books.  I spent Monday sorting through the books and placing them in the bookshelves.

That Monday evening we discovered that the desk would not fit through the doorway so it had to be disassembled.  On Tuesday my son and I disassembled the desk and reassembled it in the office.  Now I could start getting things put back, so I started putting the computer back together at my new desk.

I still have some sorting to do with a bunch of stuff, but it is now out of the living room and into my office.  Of course we weren't finished as I had to fix a hole in the wall in the living room, put a new piece of baseboard moulding down, then start rearranging the living room.  Then we started moving the last bit of stuff into my office and hanging pictures this past Saturday at 5:30 in the morning.  YIKES!!!  We then started working on moving all the furniture around in the living room.  We finally settled on an arrangement around 11:30 in the morning.

So we got all of that finished this past weekend and I am so happy.  I finally have an office where I can close the door.  YIPPEE!!!!!  (Even though I'm still sorting, tossing out, refiling, shredding, selling and giving away stuff.)

Anyway, on to this month's article...

"With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose." - Wayne Dyer

The Definition of Wealth

by Gary Glasscock

As I was moving into my office these past two weeks, I ran across a few "fortunes" that I had kept from where we had eaten at Chinese restaurants.  One stood out particularly to me though and has spurred some thinking on my part about what it said.

"Wealth is the ability to fully experience life."

So how wealthy are you?  Do you "fully experience life?"  If not, why are you limiting yourself?

That's the point right there.  How are we limiting ourselves.

Because of our past programming, we limit what we do, what we believe of ourselves, and how far we go in life.  To grow we must attack this old programming with a zeal beyond any other.  We have to be passionate about growing, and diligent in our work to better ourselves so that we can become all that we are capable of.

To do this we must first "die" so we can be "reborn," which is very similar to what Christianity says needs to be done before you get into Heaven and is symbolized by baptism.  How we accomplish this is by killing our ego.  Ego is the enemy within us that limits us, sabotages us, and controls us by fear.

So our true enemy that is keeping us from fully experiencing life is our ego.  And we basically have to get over ourselves and learn to just be the magnificent persons we were meant to be.  You see, when we can come into a situation without ego, we can make a more rational decision about the situation.  We also are more giving to others as well, because our ego is not causing us to hoard everything.

Now don't get me wrong, the ego has a place in our personal development.  However, as we learn and grow, we must leave the ego behind and develop ourselves more fully by raising our consciousness to a higher level.

One way to battle the ego is to do things that are uncomfortable to you.  The reason they are uncomfortable is because your ego is telling you that it is.  If you persist and go ahead and do it anyway, you will be ignoring your ego and moving beyond it.  This is just one way you can start winning the battle against your ego.

We are less than 2 months away from starting a new year, why not start it without your ego and endeavor to live a more balanced lifestyle.  For your family, for your friends, and most importantly, for yourself.

Peace, Abundance, and Blessings,

Gary
